October 18th, 2007 by Mike Kornely
Mike has had fifteen year experience with the internal arts, beginning with Ki-aikido, which he enjoyed enormously but had little talent. And he has learned from several qigong masters including Sifu Ko Wong and Francesco Garripoli, and has practiced their styles, but he teaches only Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong.
“For a lot of people qigong is something you want to share with people as soon as you get to know a little yourself. That’s the way it was for me. As soon as I learned a little, it was so great I wanted to start teaching. But I realized that perhaps I should hang around and learn a little more first.”
After going to lots of classes and workshops and assisting other instructors for a couple of years, Mike went to three teacher training workshops conducted by Master Li in Berlin, Hawaii and most recently in Nova Scotia. His classes usually, but not always, consist of warm ups and qi stimulations, followed by qigong learning and practice and conclude with a sitting or a non-moving qigong or meditation.
Mike also encourages his students to explore qigong and qi in their own way. “If a person practices qigong, they relax their bodies and calm their minds. Sickness and negative emotions such as sadness, anger and anxiety are eased out and replaced by a sense a well-being and contentment.”
Mike’s teaching style is informal and enthusiastic, relaxed and fun. He relies on the teaching method employed by Master Li in breaking down the movements to easy to learn, bite-size pieces and building them into the beautiful, relaxing movements that are moving qigong. It is a practice that makes qigong easy to learn and easy to teach. “I like to make my classes like mini-vacations. It sounds a little funny, but that’s how qigong classes feel to me and it’s one of the things I really like about it.”
