Mike Kornely
I teach a qigong made for modern times, Sheng Zhen Meditation, as taught by Master Li JunFeng. You can find out more about it at Sheng Zhen Online. On that site, you can see the forms and get a feel for the practice of Sheng Zhen Meditation. The movements are easy to learn and do. They are remarkable in their effect.
My classes are focused on what I have absorbed from 11 intensive teacher trainings with Master Li over the past 25 years. From his training, one learns the movements, his teaching techniques and the philosophy and purpose of Sheng Zhen Meditation. As a teacher, I try to bring that training to life in my classes. To me the essence of his teachings are contained in one of the sayings that goes with a movement:
Walk with the wind,
Very easy,
Wipe your heart clean of un-happiness,
Come back to the natural life,
A life of well-being and contentment.
My classes are a time and a place where we try on that attitude. We relax and loosen our bodies, emphasize freedom of movement, open ourselves up, our body and minds, letting our attention join the animating energy of life as it flows through us, warming us, opening our hearts. The movements work from the outside in and inside out — relaxing the body, calming the mind, letting go, opening the heart. A smile blossoms from the inside as you return to your true self. We hope that the feeling that is embodied in the movements extends out from the class, out from the practice into daily life. As Master Li often says, “Enjoy the movements. Enjoy your life”. I say, “Why not”?
Where and When to Find My Classes
I teach in the Silver Spring, MD area. Along with fellow teacher Julia Shucker, we teach Sheng Zhen Healing Meditation Stage One, a seated form with ten movements. This is an ongoing, drop-in style class every Saturday at the Schweinhut Senior Center.* Join a great group of people for this practice at noon every Saturday the center is open. This class is free to Montgomery County residents ages 55 and over.
I also hold classes at differing venues at various times, as well as private sessions, in other Sheng Zhen Meditation forms. For further information or questions feel free to contact me at 202-258-1008 (please leave a message) or email: mkornely@gmail.com. If you wish to receive email announcements about my classes, please email me.
What to Expect in My Classes
The core of my classes are Sheng Zhen Meditation, staying as close as I can to the methods, movements, teaching techniques and philosophy of Master Li. We do spend time in preparation, “warming up”. Class goals are freedom and ease of movement, whole body coordination, and letting go of physical and mental tension. In this part of my class I borrow liberally from a variety of teachers, styles and influences — notably, my fellow Peaceable Dragon instructors and teachers, the Somatic practices of Thomas Hanna, and the playful and inspiring Chung Liang (Al Huang).
